What does it mean to be a “green” producer?  How can you get involved in the green movement as an independent or studio producer?  Find out when PGA Green (the first organization in the entertainment industry to codify green production standards), together with the PGA New Media Council East presents stories from the front lines with key players in the green media and production industry.

The event will showcase producers who have successfully “greened” their projects, and will discuss ways in which producers can realize reductions in carbon emissions.

THE NEW SCHOOL OFFICE OF SUSTAINABILITY AND THE 4TH BIN WILL BE PROVIDING ON SITE COLLECTION OF PERSONAL ELECTRONICS FOR SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE RECYCLING.  ATTENDEES ARE ENCOURAGED TO BRING THEIR OWN ELECTRONICS TO THE EVENT TO BE RECYCLED.

 Speakers:

Chris Perera, Independent Producer

Chris has produced a wide variety of short videos exclusively for the Web, notably PSAs and other spots for the NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) Web sites.  As a documentary, news, unscripted and scripted reality producer, Chris has worked with the likes of Discovery, ABC Television, TLC, A&E,  BBC Productions, New York Times Television, local network affiliates, and independent film companies,. As a former t.v. reporter, he plies his detective hat in uncovering stories, including an upcoming piece for Discovery on the Erin Brockovich case. Chris has also produced for the Natural Resources Defense Council, including a recent Smart Growth PSA.

Jon Cohrs, Environmental Filmmaker/Artist, splnlss.com

Jon Cohrs is a digital artist, filmmaker, and theorist whose work has often centered on the intersection of art, technology, and the environment. His projects ‘All-Salt,’ ‘Urban Prospector,’ and ‘Spice Trade Expedition’ convey a wry perspective on the artistic humanist living in the 21^st century. Currently a professor at Parsons The New School for Design in the School for Art, media and Technology, Jon has also taught at the department of New Media Art & Interactive Video Art at Colorado College. He has worked as a technical assistant to Laurie Anderson, as a technical manager at Eyebeam Atelier Art Technology Research Lab, and as a new media installer at the Guggenheim Museum. John has presented at such diverse forums as the Sustainable Design workshop in Berlin; the Banff new Media Institute, and the ART + COMMUNICATION 2009 festival in Riga, Latvia. He is a founding member of the PDX Pop NOW! Festival in Portland, Oregon.

Matt Rosenberg, CEO, Black Cat Hosting

Matt Rosenberg is a techno-evangelist and environmental activist. As a partner in Black Cat hosting and founder of Urban Eden Technology consulting, he helps his clients make better choices for their businesses and the environment when selecting technology. His IT clients include Annie Leibovitz, Mario Batali, Joan Didion, Patti Smith and Meryl Streep.

Moderated by Katie Carpenter, Documentary/New Media Producer; Green Production Consultant, PGA Green/New Media Council East

Katherine (Katie) Carpenter is an award-winning documentary and new media producer (‘Hundred Heartbeats,’ part of MSNBC’s ‘Future Earth’ series; the Emmy-nominated documentary feature ‘A Year on Earth,’ and ‘Race to Save the Planet’ for PBS)) specializing in environmental subjects from endangered species to climate change in diverse habitats around the world. She currently works as a carbon-reduction consultant for film and video productions with New York-based Green Media Solutions (www.greenmediasolutions.com).

 Katie collaborated on the design and implementation of a pilot project greening the set of the feature film “Away We Go”, directed by Sam Mendes. She also worked on the team greening the productions of NBC’s Nightly News with Brian Williams, “Saturday Night Live”, Universal Pictures’ “It’s Complicated”, Paramount Pictures’ “Morning Glory”, and HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire”.

 Carpenter is a Co-Chair of the Producer Guild of America’s Green Committee, a member of NRDC’s Global Leadership Council, a Vice Chair of Audubon’s Women in Conservation Committee and a member of the Writers Guild of America.
